挫折を知っていたから、伸びた力がある ― 悔しさが、成長の出発点
最初に問題を見た時は、英検準1級への挑戦を諦めました。長文の量や語彙の難しさに圧倒され、「今の自分では無理だ」と感じたからです。そのときの悔しさは、心の中に残り続けていました。
高校進学後、その経験は「もう一度挑戦したい」「今度こそ乗り越えたい」という強い原動力へと変わっていきました。
「できるつもり」から「学び続ける自分」へ
― 視野が広がった高校での気づき
入学当初、本生徒は「授業についていけるだろうか」という不安を抱えていました。同時に、周囲の生徒の発言や理解の深さに触れ、「まだまだ自分には学ぶ余地がある」と実感したそうです。
この気づきは、英語力以上に、学びに向き合う姿勢を大きく変えました。「分かったつもり」で止まらず、伸び続けようとする姿勢が、この学校で育まれていきました。
毎日の積み重ねが、自信をつくった ― 継続する力という“目に見えない成長”
本生徒の学習は、決して派手なものではありません。単語は毎日100語、英語学習は1日1時間、長文は毎日1問に取り組みました。リスニングが伸び悩んだときには、何度もシャドウィングを繰り返しました。ライティング対策にも、継続して取り組んできました。
こうした積み重ねは、やがて「できる」という実感となり、自信へと変わっていきました。
支えられながら、挑戦できる環境がある
― 使える英語が身についた瞬間
甲陵高校での学びも力に変えました。ネイティブ・スピーカーによる丁寧なライティング指導や、授業担当の先生と一緒に取り組んだ二次試験対策。
特に、「難しい表現を、簡単な英語に言い換えて伝える力」が身についたことで、英語を使うことへの不安が薄れていきました。リスニングが聞き取れるようになり、書くスピードが上がり、英文を正確に速く読めるようになるなど、成長を実感できる瞬間が確かにありました。
文武両立が育てた、折れない心
― 弓道部で磨かれた継続力
本生徒は弓道部にも所属しています。高校入学後に競技を始め、結果がすぐに出なくても、仲間と共に努力を重ねてきました。
顧問からは「継続できる精神力がある」と評価されています。勉強と部活動のどちらかを諦めるのではなく、どちらも大切にできる経験が、人としての成長につながっています。
英検準1級は、成長の証 ― 次の挑戦へ進むための通過点として
英検準1級の取得は、大きな成果。しかし、本生徒はそれをゴールとは考えていません。「英語を、人とつながるための道具として使いたい」と、次の目標を見据えています。
最後に中学生へ送った言葉は、成長の本質を語っています。
「毎日の継続は、必ず大きな成功につながります。毎日の努力を大切にしてください。」

A First-Year Student at Koryo High School Passed EIKEN Pre-1 Level!
A first-year student at our school passed the 2025 EIKEN Test in Practical English Proficiency (Pre-1 Level, Round 2).
Here, we introduce the student’s efforts and a message to junior high school students who want to enter our school.

Because the Student Knew Failure, the Student Could Grow
— Regret in Junior High School Became the Starting Point
When the student was in the third year of junior high school, the student gave up taking the EIKEN Pre-1 Level test.
The long reading passages and difficult words were too hard, and the student thought, “I can’t do this now.”
The regret stayed in the student’s heart for a long time.
After entering high school, that experience changed into strong motivation.
The student thought, “I want to try again,” and “This time, I want to overcome it.”
From “I Think I Can” to “I Want to Keep Learning”
— A New Realization in High School
At first, the student felt worried about keeping up with high school classes. At the same time, the student saw other students speaking well and understanding deeply.
Then the student realized, “I still have a lot to learn.”
This realization changed not only English skills, but also the student’s attitude toward learning.
The student learned not to stop at “I understand,” but to keep trying to improve.
Daily Efforts Built Confidence — Invisible Growth Through Continuation
The student’s study style was not special.
The student learned 100 new words every day, studied English for one hour a day, and read one long passage every day. Listening practice was especially difficult, so the student did shadowing many times. The student also kept practicing writing without stopping. These daily efforts slowly became confidence.
A Supportive Environment Made Challenges Possible
— Learning English That Can Be Used
The learning environment at Koryo High School helped the student.
Native English teachers carefully checked the student’s writing, and the Japanese teacher of English practiced for the speaking test together.
By learning how to change difficult ideas into simple English, the student became less afraid of using English.
Listening became easier, writing became faster, and reading became more accurate.
The student could clearly feel personal growth.
A Strong Heart Grown Through Both Study and Club Activities — Continuation Learned in the Kyudo Club
The student belongs to the Kyudo Club and started Kyudo in high school.
Even when results did not come soon, the student continued practicing with teammates.
The club advisor says the student has strong mental strength to continue efforts.
Balancing study and club activities helped the student grow as a person.
Passing EIKEN Pre-1 Level Is Proof of Growth — A Step Toward the Next Challenge
Passing the EIKEN Pre-1 Level is a great achievement.
However, the student does not think it is the final goal.
The student wants to use English as a tool to connect with people.
Finally, the student sent this message to junior high school students:
“Daily efforts will always lead to big success. Please value your daily hard work.”
At Koryo High School, students can find their own potential and continue to grow.
